The National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) held it's third ‘Careers in Biopharma’ job fair on Saturday with 20 companies, recruiting for positions, from across the biopharma sector taking part. The oversubscribed event will see upwards of 600 prospective candidates matched up with blue-chip biopharma companies. Companies attending include CPL, Sanofi Genzyme, Amgen, LifeScience Consultants, Pfizer, BioMarin, DPS Engineering, Eli Lilly and Co, Regeneron, Matrix Recruitment, McGee Pharma, MSD, Abbvie, Eurofins Lancaster Labs, Bristol Myers-Squibb, Fastnet Recruitment and Alexion. Dominic Carolan, CEO of NIBRT said, “The Irish biopharma industry is experiencing a fantastic period of growth and has been boosted by a stream of significant new investments in recent months. With investment comes jobs and we are hoping this year’s ‘Careers in Biopharma’ jobs fair will match great candidates with suitable employers from across the industry.

“We recognise that the skills required for these jobs are very complex in their nature and we strive to address the skills gap in the industry. In addition to training upwards of 3,800 people employed in the industry each year, NIBRT is actively involved in upskilling people with manufacturing experience who are out of work. As part of the Springboard initiative, NIBRT provides training support to over 400 people each year to help develop the expertise required to work in the sector. In the last year alone, 65% of jobseekers who attended our training programmes gained employment in biopharma.” The Careers in Biopharma event includes:

  •  An overview of the employment opportunities available in the biopharma industry and the skills set required
  •  Presentations from blue-chip biopharma companies including Regeneron, Lilly, BMS, Sanofi Genzyme, MSD, Amgen, Pfizer, BioMarin and Alexion on opportunities available.
  • Opportunities for 1-1 meetings between employers and prospective candidates.
  • Details on training and education programmes, including an opportunity to register for free Springboard programmes.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD, said: “"The biopharma sector in Ireland has seen dynamic growth over the past decade, with both multinational and indigenous companies now located throughout the regions. Ireland is recognised internationally as having a rich and strong pool of talent for the sector and it is important that we continue to develop that talent pool over the coming years to meet the employment opportunities that are being created by the likes of the companies that are exhibiting here in NIBRT today."  Matt Moran, Director of BiopharmaChemical Ireland, said: "These are very exiting times for the industry in Ireland with €65 billion in exports and over €3 billion worth of investment in the sector marking a period of sustained growth. Creating the right environment for growth means we need to ensure that there is a competitive business environment and that we invest in education as well as R&D. There are already 52,000 people working in the biopharma, chemical and medtech sectors but to maintain the strong growth we must have the right skills. The high calibre of third level graduates is one of the main attractions for FDI when choosing Ireland. But more must be done to encourage students to pursue science, technology, engineering and maths subjects. Developing Ireland's talent pool is one of the key issues highlighted in our new strategy, 'Molecules make a difference' NIBRT are to be commended for coordinating this excellent careers day - they play a critical role in ensuring that the sector has sufficient skilled and well trained graduates- it really is a fantastic facility.”
