The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke has confirmed that his Department will seek Government approval to reopen the Emergency Humanitarian Flooding Scheme as a matter of urgency. The scheme has previously been opened to provide support for businesses who had been unable to secure flood insurance and were impacted by flood water as a result of severe weather events.
Minister Burke highlighted how,
“I am monitoring the impact of Storm Bert and would like to assure traders that my Department is liaising with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage as well as with the respective Local Authorities to reactivate the Emergency Humanitarian Flooding Scheme should this be necessary.”
The Irish Red Cross have previously administered and made payments under the Emergency Humanitarian Flooding Scheme on behalf of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment providing much needed urgent support to businesses who through no fault of their own have been unable to secure flood insurance.
Minister Burke went on to say,
“I fully appreciate the trauma and distress that such a flood event has on our vitally important local businesses, particularly at this time of year and would like to assure traders that I will be working across Government to assist businesses as required.”
