Call for views on revision of the General Product Safety Directive

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment is seeking views from stakeholders on the EU General Product Safety Regulation proposal.

On 30 June 2021 the EU Commission published its draft proposal for a General Product Safety Regulation. The proposed Regulation will replace the General Product Safety Directive, which is twenty years old and is in need of revision.

The proposed Regulation aims to improve protection for consumers by:

addressing product safety challenges linked to new technologies
protecting consumers when shopping online
making product recalls more effective
ensuring better enforcement of product safety rules throughout the supply chain by giving market surveillance authorities more powers and better tools to take action

The proposed Regulation will also provide better conditions for businesses by:

providing better enforcement of product safety rules and market surveillance
ensuring a more even application of product safety rules
providing more legal certainty with clearer rules
ensuring a level playing field for businesses operating in the EU, both online and offline

Submissions

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment is seeking views from stakeholders on the EU General Product Safety Regulation proposal. Submissions should be marked “Consultation on the EU General Product Safety Regulation” and should be emailed to conspol@enterprise.gov.ie.

The deadline for submissions is close of business on 24 September 2021.

Publication of submissions and relevant provision of the Freedom of Information Act 2014

However, should you submit information that you consider commercially sensitive, please identify that information in your submission and give reasons for considering it commercially sensitive. The Department will consult with you regarding such information before making any decision to publish.
