Call for Expressions of Interest – Appointment as Ministerial Nominees to the Employment Law Review Group

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment invites expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons with significant experience in the field of employment law for consideration for appointment as a member (Ministerial nominee) to the Employment Law Review Group (ELRG) for a four-year period.

The Employment Law Review Group (ELRG) is a statutory advisory expert body charged with advising the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment on the review and development of employment law in Ireland.   

The successful candidate must possess expertise in Irish employment law which is up to date and developed either through legal practice, industry experience, public policy or academic pursuits. Experience of how employment law affects micro, small and medium sized enterprises is welcomed. 

Qualifications

It is desirable for candidates to:

  • have significant professional experience working in the field of employment law, redundancy or insolvency, either as a practitioner, academic or legal advisor (ideally a minimum of five years of recent practical experience)
  • possess a strong legal background with qualifications in law, particularly in employment law, redundancy law and/or insolvency law
  • have been called to the Bar or have been enrolled as a Solicitor in the State

Experience

Successful candidates will display:

  • extensive experience indicative of a deep understanding of the areas of employment law, redundancy law and/or insolvency law
  • relevant practical experience representing workers, employers, or both
  • considerable practical experience, at senior executive or Board level, in the areas of employment law, redundancy law and/or insolvency law
  • previous experience providing expert advice or serving on advisory bodies
  • an understanding of current and emerging issues in employment and redundancy law, including relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks 

Personal attributes

In addition to the foregoing, it is desirable that all candidates should:

  • be open-minded strategic thinkers, able to bring their own experience to bear on issues under discussion
  • have a commitment to an evidence-based approach and the capacity to appreciate the implications of complex and multi-faceted evidence
  • have the ability to analyse complex legal and policy issues and provide clear, evidence-based advice
  • have the ability to make important and difficult objective decisions
  • be able to constructively challenge the opinions of others, work to achieve a shared consensus and accept collective responsibility
  • have excellent communications skills, both oral and written, including the ability to express themselves clearly and succinctly, and to present complex legal information in a clear and concise manner
  • be able to work as part of a team and have a proven track record of collaborative working
  • be willing to volunteer time to the ELRG, including attending meetings and contributing to recommendations
  • experience in engaging with a range of stakeholders, including government bodies, trade unions, employer organizations and other relevant groups
