Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke today updated the Government on the progress relating to strengthening the mandate of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC). This initiative forms part of commitments under the Programme for Government and the Action Plan on Competitiveness and Productivity.
As part of this work, Minister Burke has appointed Mr Geoffrey Gray as a member of the CCPC with effect from 19 January 2026. Mr Gray is an economist who has significant international and Irish experience in both the public and private sectors. His extensive experience of complex competition and consumer protection cases at a senior level complements the Commission’s dual mandate.
The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment has worked closely with the CCPC to strengthen its mandate through the addition to and enhancement of its senior leadership team. In addition, the recruitment of an additional CCPC Member is ongoing, and the CCPC has recently commenced the recruitment of two Senior Directors who will have a direct role in supporting the Members to ensure it can continue to deliver on its important brief.
In parallel, the Department is reviewing the legislative framework governing consumer protection fines. Future penalties are expected to align with those applicable to competition law infringements, ensuring greater consistency and impact across the regulatory landscape.
Minister Burke said:
“I am pleased to appoint Geoffrey Gray to the CCPC. His extensive experience comes at a pivotal time as Government advances its commitments on competition and consumer protection. The CCPC’s role in promoting compliance and enforcing competition and consumer protection law is vital to supporting fair competition and empowering consumers. These actions underscore the Government’s commitment to that mandate, and I am confident Geoffrey’s expertise will be an invaluable asset to the Commission.”
