Minister for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Robert Troy TD, today welcomed the appointment of EU Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis as the EU’s Trade Commissioner-designate.
Minister Troy said:
"The appointment of the new Commissioner at such an important juncture of EU and US trade issues is very welcome and I hope that the confirmation process with the European Parliament can be expedited to ensure he can continue the work of his predecessor to navigate the challenges ahead.
He continued:
"The EU's ambitious agenda for bilateral Free Trade Agreements are vital to Ireland as we strive to continue to expand into global markets and equally, our close and longstanding trade and investment relationship with the US.
“As a small nation, Ireland will be greatly affected by Brexit, as well as the global and national impact of COVID-19, and I will work closely with the Commissioner-designate to advocate for and champion the role of Ireland in EU trade policy formation.”
