Progress on Programme for Government targets following latest Labour Force Survey release

Today (November 20th) the Central Statistics Office (CSO) released the results of the Labour Force Survey in respect of Q3 2018. This survey replaced the Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS) from the beginning of Q3 2017.

In 2016, the Programme for a Partnership Government set a number of targets towards which the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation has been working. The ultimate goal of the Government is to deliver sustainable full employment. As a step towards this, the Programme for a Partnership Government set the target for the creation of an additional 200,000 jobs by 2020, of which 135,000 were to be outside of Dublin.

Following the release today of Q3 2018 of the Labour Force Survey as issued by the CSO, the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation is pleased to announce that it is on track to achieve this target. Based on seasonally unadjusted data from the Labour Force Survey release, 192,400 jobs have been created over the time period Q1 2016 to Q3 2018. Of these jobs, 130,000 have been created outside of Dublin.

Minister Humphreys welcomed the continued progress towards the Programme for a Partnership Government targets:

“This consistent improvement is reflective of the success of the Government’s annual Action Plan for Jobs – first introduced in 2012. The Action Plan for Jobs has had a significant role to play in establishing a framework under which the optimum conditions for enterprise and economic growth can be pursued.

“The economy has had a complete turn-around since 2012 and we are nearly at full employment.

“The Government remains committed to maintaining the strong momentum in job growth, while taking into consideration new and evolving context. This will be carried out through our plan for the next phase of Ireland’s economic development, Future Jobs, which is currently being developed and will be published in early 2019.”
