Minister Ged Nash welcomes drop in unemployment rate to 9.3%

The Minister for Business & Employment Ged Nash TD is welcoming the continuing fall in the rate of unemployment. According to the Central Statistics Office the unemployment rate for October is 9.3%, down from 9.4% in September.

There are now 24,900 more people at work than there was this time last year, with the monthly drop in the number of unemployed standing at 1,900.

Minister Nash said, “These are the lowest unemployment figures we have had in more than six years. While I acknowledge that there is much more to be done to meet the Government’s ambitious target of full employment by 2018, we are certainly on the right track.”

“I am particularly pleased to see a significant drop in the number of young people who are unemployed since last month. 1,700 15 to 24 year olds who were unemployed in September have either found work or returned to study or training. Last year, 800 young people left the dole queues during the same period, so we can see that there is a significant acceleration in the opportunities for our youth.”

Minister Nash continued, “As our economic recovery takes hold, alongside our role in assisting to create more than 1,300 jobs per week, I am also concerned with ensuring that these jobs are decent jobs with decent levels of pay that will assist working families in achieving better standards of living.”
