28th May 2015
The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD today (Thursday) announced that Shopify, a leading cloud-based commerce platform designed for small and medium-sized businesses to design, set up and manage their stores across multiple sales channels, is to establish customer service operations in Ireland. Shopify is looking to hire up to 50 people by early 2016.
The announcement is made with the support of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland.
Shopify is starting to hire Gurus, the company’s customer support agents, to work remotely in the Galway region. The new operations will allow the company to better serve their international merchants across any time zone. Headquartered in Canada, Shopify has over 600 employees and currently powers more than 165,000 stores in approximately 150 countries.
Minister Bruton said: “We have specifically targeted online industries as part of our Action Plan for Jobs, and over the past four years we have seen major growth in this area. We can now justifiably call Ireland the internet capital of Europe. Today’s announcement that Shopify is opening operations in Galway and looking to hire up to 50 positions by 2016 is a great boost for the West, and a further great example of what is possible right across the country in this sector. I wish the team every success with this investment”.
“Our 24/7 customer support has become one of the most valuable services that we offer to our merchants,” said Roy Sunstrum, Director of Customer Support, Shopify. “By hiring Remote Gurus in Ireland, we can ensure that merchants around the globe, in any time zone, will have access to one-on-one support from one of our commerce experts. Ireland has become a major tech hub and the level of talent is what really drew us to the region.”
Martin Shanahan, CEO IDA Ireland said: “Shopify’s announcement is great news for Galway and the wider West region. Creating jobs across the country is a key part of IDA Ireland’s strategy ‘Winning: FDI 2015-2019’. Home working offers an opportunity to provide an additional source of untapped skills for our client companies as well as providing regional employment opportunities in locations which find it challenging to attract investment.”
Shopify recruiters will be in Galway, from June 1-7, 2015 to meet with and interview potential candidates. To find out more about Shopify’s trip, please visit: http://galway.shopify.com/
