Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (No 10 of 2005)

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 came into operation on the 1 September 2005 and (in conjunction with the Chemicals Acts 2008 & 2010) is the principal Act under which the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) operates.

The primary focus of the 2005 Act is on the prevention of workplace accidents, illnesses and dangerous occurrences as well as providing for significantly increased fines and penalties aimed at deterring the minority who continue to flout safety and health laws.

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 has been amended by –

  • Section 37 of the Chemicals Act 2008;
  • Section 12  of the Chemicals (Amendment ) Act 2010; and
  • Part 7 of the Industrial Development (Forfás Dissolution) Act 2014.
