North-East Regional Enterprise Plan to 2024

The North-East Regional Enterprise Plan to 2024 was launched by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment in Cavan on 24 February 2022.

The appetite to work collaboratively on the North-East Regional Enterprise Plan has been clearly demonstrated by the willingness of strategic partners to get involved from the perspective of development agencies and bodies, LEO’s and Local Authorities and especially the private sector as demonstrated by the membership of the working groups that have been set up to drive the implementation of the plan.

The many successful projects under previous rounds of REDF and BEDF funding will be an integral part of delivering on the new plan, for example, the Data Value Hub and Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre of Excellence will be key to driving the transition to digitalisation objective in the Plan. The Connected Health and Well Being Centre and Cluster in DkIT will facilitate increased collaboration between industry (indigenous and FDI), academia, healthcare providers, and enterprise support agencies and will be to the forefront in developing the Connected Health sector in the North-East and beyond. The Bioconnect Innovation Centre and food hub initiatives will be an integral part of the North-East region’s agri sector proposals.

The five strategic objectives

1

Develop a strong and coherent messaging proposition for the North-East region

By 2024 the North-East REP will have developed a suite of ‘marketing collateral’ for the North-East region and use these to promote the North-East as a location of choice for investment.

2

Position the North-East region as an exemplar in guiding and supporting digital transition for enterprise

Build on the existing supports particularly those funded through previous REDF and BEDF funding to elevate and position the North-East Region as an exemplar in guiding and supporting digital transition for enterprise.

3

Strengthen the regional SME ecosystem through collaboration, capability and capacity building

This objective aims to develop and roll out a Business Operational Excellence Programme for SMEs in the North-East and lead to increased engagement between MNCs and SMEs across the region with a focus on supply chain opportunities and leadership/management development.

4

Supporting our enterprise to mainstream climate action and transition to low carbon into their business planning and delivery

This objective includes:

  • the completion of an analysis of enterprises’ understanding of transitioning to low carbon and the implications of same in terms of planning for the future - supply chain issues, servicing carbon neutral companies, showing their green credentials and moving to net zero carbon
  • exploring opportunities as to how smaller companies in the region may support larger companies in meeting their decarbonisation requirements
  • identifying the barriers to start ups in the green economy in the North-East Region

5

Leverage the full extent of existing and emerging growth sectors in the North-East

Establish a North-East Agri Sector Innovation and Leadership forum to map out an ambitious long-term strategic blueprint for the development of the agri sector in the North-East region.

Ensure we harness the potential of recently funded REDF and BEDF projects on an inter and intra-regional basis.

Richard Hanlon chairs the new plan for the North-East, with support from the program manager.
