Independent Advisory Councils

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment provides research, analysis and administrative support to a number of independent advisory groups including the National Competitiveness Council (NCC) and the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN).

National Competitiveness Council

National Competitiveness CouncilThe National Competitiveness Council (NCC) reports to the Taoiseach on key competitiveness issues facing the Irish economy and offers recommendations on policy actions required to enhance Ireland’s competitive position.

The NCC was established by Government in May 1997 as part of the Partnership 2000 Agreement. Members are appointed by the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment. The current membership includes employer and trade union representatives; people with relevant expertise in competitiveness and a representative of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Innovation.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment provides the Council with research, analysis and secretariat support.

Expert Group on Future Skills Needs

Expert Group on Future Skills NeedsThe Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) advises the Irish Government on current and future skills needs of the economy and on other labour market issues that impact on Ireland’s enterprise and employment growth.

The EGFSN reports to the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment and the Minister for Education and Skills.

Membership of the EGFSN is made up of representatives of business, employees, education, government departments and state agencies. The Group’s work programme is managed by the Head of Secretariat based in the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. The SOLAS Skills and Labour Market Research Unit provides the Group with data, analysis and research and manages the National Skills Database. The EGFSN’s budget comes from the National Training Fund.
