A Rapid Response Research and Innovation programme to help respond to the COVID-19 pandemic has been developed by the government’s research and innovation agencies.
Joint Rapid Response Call Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), Enterprise Ireland (EI), and IDA Ireland launched a joint rapid response call in March to fund research, development, and innovation (RD&I) activities to deliver significant and timely impact for Ireland within the context of the emergency. The call was closely co-ordinated with the rapid response call launched by the Health Research Board (HRB) and the Irish Research Council (IRC).
Phase 2 Call Phase 2 of the Call aimed to support research in a number of thematic areas focused on advancing our knowledge of the virus and its impact on our health, and developing solutions that contribute to economic and societal recovery.
Successful projects The initial rapid response call resulted in more than 500 applications, with significant numbers of applications in areas of relevance to frontline healthcare, diagnostics, infection control, contact tracing and management of the mitigation measures related to social distancing and isolation.
