Speaking from Houston, Texas, where he is leading a four-day trade mission of 40 Irish companies to Texas, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, said:

"My first thoughts today are with the workers, their families and all the people of Rathdrum at this uncertain time.

"I have spoken to the company, who employ approximately 2000 people across several sites, and they have assured me of their commitment to Ireland.

"The pharmaceutical sector, a key employer in Ireland, experiences constant change, but despite this employment in Ireland has remained stable and in fact grew in 2012 with several major announcements. In particular, a number of companies have successfully weathered major challenges to secure employment and move to growth. Today's announcement comes as a result of a global restructuring.

"Today's announcement foresees no redundancies for almost two years. I am determined to ensure, working closely with the IDA and the company, that no stone is left unturned in the search for a replacement operator for this modern facility and its highly qualified workforce".
